Reliable Solutions for Home Moving

Unsurprisingly, the majority of us are not pro-moving. We are so averse to moving that some deem it more stressful than having children or getting divorced!

Despite their reasons for home moving, moving can bring some anxiety. Reportedly, 40% of movers are worried about moving expenses, while 37% loathe the packing and unpacking part of moving.

While neither of these concerns can be eliminated in their entirety, you can do things to lighten the latter’s load. If you are one of the people who pull hairs when packing and unpacking, proper moving solutions can make your next move a lot less frustrating.

Here are some constructive suggestions to consider for your next move.

Platform Trolleys

Platform trolleys are designed to facilitate the transportation of heavy or bulky items, which can be highly challenging to lift and move around. Examples include couches, heavy electronics, pianos, and so on.

When executing a DIY move, your safety is one of the primary concerns. Platform trolleys feature a sturdy, flat, wooden, or metallic surface and typically have four wheels. So, all you need to do is load your items and wheel the trolley to the moving truck. The same goes for professional moving companies, which must affect residential and commercial moves.

When moving, you can just place large items like fridges, washing machines, and so on the platform trolley and push them to the moving vehicle. Similarly, you can pack smaller items like utensils, shoes, and clothes into large boxes. You can then load these boxes onto the trolley and push them to the moving vehicle.

Professional Movers

Professional movers provide a convenient solution for people who would rather not have to handle the details of a move.

Professional moving companies handle the logistics of a move from start to finish. This means packing, transporting, and unpacking in the new house or premises.

To do this, they inquire about the particulars of a move, which might include house size, unique items to be moved, and the distance to be covered. Some will come for a site visit. Once this is done, they provide quotations for the move’s cost. They then come in on the agreed dates and move you to the new house. You are not required to handle anything besides packing valuables and important documents.

This would aptly solve all your packing and moving concerns, but it will cost you a pretty penny.

Moving Dollies

Dollies are very similar to platform trolleys. Generally, a dolly is a two or four-wheeled flat platform used to move large and small items. The term dolly is casually used to refer to a variety of items, including all-wheeled platforms for transport, including platform trolleys.

While dollies function much in the same way as platform trolleys, the main difference is that dollies are typically not fitted with handles like platform trolleys. Modern versions will often feature handles as well. Some come with a cord that you use to move the dolly.

Once you identify an item to move, bring the dolly as close as possible to it. Carefully load the item onto the dolly, then move it to the moving truck.

Hand Trucks

A hand truck is similar to a dolly and a platform trolley but has minor differences. It has an L-shaped, vertical design with an upright handle. It also has a small bottom ledge and two wheels. On the other hand, dollies are four-wheeled and don’t come with affixed handles.

Dollies are much larger and primarily used for larger, heavier, and bulkier items, while hand trucks offer better efficiency when moving smaller items or stacked boxes.

One of the main advantages of hand trucks is that their vertical design allows them to move tall items. This makes them a convenient tool for moving fridges, cots and packed moving boxes.

Some hand trucks come with additional attachments to make hauling things upstairs much easier.

The hand trucks’ two-wheel design, vertical orientation, and handles make it easy to manoeuvre loads through tight spaces.

Pallet Jack

One key safety concern when moving is safety, more so when it comes to lifting heavy objects.

One tool that can help you do this is the pallet jack. These are also known as pallet trucks and feature the following components:

  • Handle
  • Wheeled trolley
  • Linkages
  • Hydraulic pump
  • Forks
  • Load wheels

Pallets are designed to lift heavy items off the floor so they can be moved. They are fitted with a platform and two forks.

Pallet jacks provide a safer way to lift bulky items, reduce manual labor, aid transportation, and fit well in tight spaces. These qualities make them ideal for residential moving.

There are manual and electric pallet jacks. While anyone can use the manual pallet jack, you need a license to operate an electric one.

For heavier work, such as commercial moving, the forklift is much better as it can carry heavier loads and has greater lifting abilities.

Furniture Blankets

Also known as moving blankets, furniture blankets are used to wrap furniture, pianos, and other household items that you don’t want to be scratched or dented during the moving process.

You can also wrap up smaller items like vases, mirrors, glass items, and lamps to provide extra protection before packing them up in moving boxes. Similarly, you can place items on the blanket and drag them across a room without damaging the flooring.

While many moving blankets are on the market, you need good-quality ones with ample padding and a quilted, sturdy outer covering.

To use these, wrap them around the item you want to pad. Once you load your items up, you can also place a blanket between each individually wrapped item to prevent them from knocking each other and getting damaged in transit. Keep in mind that these blankets are generally not water-resistant. If the weather calls for rain, ensure that you have plastic wraps over the moving blankets.

Moving Straps

These are also known as furniture or moving straps. They use the principle of leverage to allow you to lift heavier weights than you usually would. You slip the straps under your shoulders and then under the object.

This allows the object’s weight to be distributed. Using this method, you have better chances of safely lifting heavy items like dressers, washing machines, and couches.

Another way moving straps help when moving is by lowering the center of gravity of an object being moved. This reduces the need for excessive bending which might hurt your back if done in an improper form.

These straps come in two types: shoulder straps and forearm straps. While both use the same principle to move items, shoulder straps can move heavier items than forearm straps.

Similarly, moving straps make more sense in some scenarios than others. For example, if you have access to a dolly, sliding a couch onto the dolly might be more accessible and safer. However, moving straps might be better than a dolly if you are lugging heavy items down a flight of steps.

Moving Supplies

Moving supplies are just a collection of essential moving items that you would need to execute a successful move. These are mainly used in packing and unpacking items and are more affordable than the tools and equipment above.

some essential moving supplies include the following;

Moving boxes

These come in different sizes and sturdiness. These are especially useful for bundling and packing smaller items for transit, such as utensils, bedding, books, toys, shoes, clothes, pillows, toiletries, and so on.

Markers

You want to make unpacking as quick and easy as possible. One way to do this is by marking which items are in which box. This way the items will be unloaded and placed in their respective rooms awaiting unpacking. Be sure to have one or two boxes with items you will need on the first night, like bedding, toiletries, bulbs, and cutlery.

Packing tape

Get some heavy-duty packing tape to seal big boxes once complete.

Bubble wrap and plastic film

This comes in handy for wrapping fragile items before packing them in boxes. Items made of glass, porcelain, antiques, and paintings might require this extra padding. You can substitute bubble wrap with newspapers, blankets, and towels.

If there is a possibility that it might rain, then wrap items that could get water damage in plastic wrap before loading.
